AI search optimisation, also called Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) or Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), is the work of getting your business cited and recommended inside AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. For a Kenyan business, getting started takes four steps: test how AI tools currently describe you, fix the basic facts about your business across the web, restructure your key pages so they answer questions directly, and build mentions on sites you do not control. This guide walks through each step and what to expect in the first three months.
Why does AI search matter for businesses in Kenya right now?
Kenya has the highest monthly AI usage of any country measured. The Digital 2026 Mid-Year report from DataReportal found that 97.5% of Kenyan internet users had used an AI tool in the past month, ahead of the UAE and Indonesia. Google’s own search data for March 2026 showed Kenyan interest in AI agents up more than 16,000% in a year.
At the same time, Google results are changing. When an AI Overview appears at the top of a search, clicks to the first organic result fall by about 58%, according to Ahrefs. So even people who still use Google are increasingly reading an AI-written answer rather than clicking a link. If your business is not one of the sources that answer draws on, you are invisible to that reader.
The opportunity is that almost nobody in Kenya is optimising for this yet. A handful of agencies mention it; very few businesses have done the work. The sources AI engines settle on for a category tend to stick, which makes the next year or two the window to claim your place.
Step 1: find out what AI tools currently say about you
Before changing anything, run a baseline. Open ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity and ask the questions a customer would ask, in plain language and with a location. For example: “Which companies offer solar installation in Nairobi?”, “Who is the best accountant for small businesses in Mombasa?”, “Recommend a boutique hotel in Naivasha.”
Record three things for each answer: whether your business is named, which competitors are named, and which websites the answer cites. Do the same search on Google and note whether an AI Overview appears and who it credits. This takes about an hour and tells you exactly where you stand. Our AEO and GEO service starts with the same audit, done systematically across dozens of queries.
Step 2: make the basic facts about your business consistent everywhere
AI engines build an understanding of your business from every place it appears online. If your name, phone number, location and services differ between your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook page and a directory listing, the engine’s confidence drops and it moves on to a competitor whose facts line up.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile with the right category, service area and a description that uses the same wording as your website.
- Make sure your name, address and phone number are identical on your website footer, social profiles and any directories.
- Add Organization schema markup to your website stating your name, founding date, location and services. Research cited by SEO Sherpa found 61% of pages ChatGPT cites carry structured data, against 25% of Google’s top organic results.
Step 3: restructure your key pages to answer questions directly
AI engines quote pages that state an answer plainly and early. Analysis of 1.2 million ChatGPT answers by Kevin Indig found that 44% of citations come from the first 30% of a page. A page that opens with three paragraphs of welcome copy before saying what you do will rarely be cited.
For each of your main service pages, do the following. Open with one or two sentences that say exactly what the service is, who it is for and where you offer it. Use headings written as the questions customers ask. Add a short FAQ section at the bottom. Include specific facts, numbers and locations rather than adjectives. This is the same discipline as good SEO, applied a little more strictly.
Step 4: build mentions on sites you do not control
Most AI citations do not come from a brand’s own website. Studies through 2026 put the share of citations from third-party and earned sources between 68% and 84%. That means directory listings, industry association pages, local news coverage, partner websites and review platforms all count.
Start with the obvious ones for Kenya: a complete Google Business Profile with regular reviews, listings on the business directories relevant to your sector, a LinkedIn company page that is actually maintained, and any trade association you belong to. Then look for one or two pieces of coverage a year in Kenyan business media. Each mention is another piece of evidence the engine can use.
What should you expect in the first 90 days?
Structural changes, such as fixing your business facts and rewriting page openings, can show up in AI answers within a few weeks because so few competitors have done them. Building third-party authority takes months and keeps compounding. A realistic first quarter looks like this: month one, audit and fix the facts; month two, rewrite the five pages that matter most and add schema; month three, start the earned-mentions work and re-run the baseline queries to measure movement.

Frequently asked questions
What is AI search optimisation?
AI search optimisation, also called Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) or Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), is the practice of structuring your content and online presence so that AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and features like Google AI Overviews, cite and recommend your business when someone asks a question in your category.
Is AEO the same as the KRA Authorised Economic Operator programme?
No. The Kenya Revenue Authority’s Authorised Economic Operator programme is a customs certification for importers and exporters. Answer Engine Optimisation is a digital marketing discipline. They share an acronym and nothing else.
Do I need to stop doing SEO to focus on AI search?
No. The two share most of their foundations, including a fast site, clear structure and authoritative content. Good SEO is the base that AI search optimisation builds on, and most of the work benefits both.
How much does AI search optimisation cost in Kenya?
It depends on the size of your site and how competitive your category is. Most Kenyan businesses can start with an audit and a focused set of page and profile fixes, then scale up the earned-mentions work over time. Digital Orbit offers a free initial audit.
